Matt Maddocks has had a lifelong fascination with sculptural form and studied sculpture at Bretton Hall. The setting in Yorkshire Sculpture Park inspired him to further develop his skills in material based sculpture. Matt draws from the natural form of stone to influence, inform and inspire his pieces. He chooses each individual stone for its natural affinity with his designs, which explore the contrast between geometric and natural form.
Standing stones are intrinsically symbolic and feature in folklore as having a mysterious quality. Matt's quest is to prise the mystery apart, to go beyond the familiar exterior and dissect the stones to bring them to life. It is the discovery of what is hidden within the form of the stone that inspires his creations. The stone responds to a highly polished finish, bringing out its dark rich colours, which is in contrast to the external surface shaped by nature. This juxtaposition enables his pieces to draw the observer through the centre of the sculpture, revealing the inner beauty in harmony with the outer ruggedness.
Matt has also built up significant experience to enhance his skill as a sculptor, having previously worked with wood, landscape, glass and interior design. He undertook historical research into stone carving during his studies, followed by a period of training and development in India. He still works closely with his team in India, drawing on the knowledge and skills of local craftsmen to source high quality materials, so he is able to produce his innovative, tactile and bespoke pieces.
