Graham Davey sculpts open and closed hollow forms in English hardwoods; typically oak, ash, elm and sycamore at his studio to the west of St Ives in Cornwall. Inspired by mid 20th century design, he favours form over function - especially in his hollow vessels.

“It’s a collaboration between maker and material. The maker shapes the piece and hollows it, leaving a thin wall; the material then starts to work, altering the shape as moisture is released.  Tensions in the wood slowly relax, pushing and pulling the piece into a combined expression of maker and material.”
