Carole Andrews builds sculpture from unremarkable materials, particularly roofing felt. She manipulates this malleable medium using techniques taken from the gentle arts of Origami and Embroidery to make unusual organic forms. Strange textures and complex shapes emerge through folding, pressing and teasing, and these powerful sculptures exert their presence upon the landscape. The work reflects her interest in the natural world; ambiguous forms initially reminiscent of organic growth are developed by combining steel, expanded polystyrene and resin with the roofing felt.
The starting point for Carole Andrews's sculpture often comes from watching growing garden plants, overlaid by the memory of snorkelling and scuba diving over coral reefs. These memories, together with the construction process, reconcile the startling paradox between form and material, creating intriguing sculpture which invites a second look.
